Alternative Infertility Treatments: Your Diet

Among the many alternative infertility treatments, a healthy diet is a great contender. Diet can influence fertility, and there are foods that will increase the chances of conceiving, while other foods are unhealthy and may affect the capacity to conceive. Balanced and regular meals that contain healthy ingredients are essential.

Foods that Boost Fertility

Dairy products are rich in calcium, which is important to support fertility. Milk, yogurts, cheese or sour cream should be consumed on a daily basis. Vegetables, such as broccoli, cabbage or kale, contain calcium and may also be consumed. Orange is a fruit that is a rich source of calcium. Generally speaking, all fruits and vegetables are healthy fertility boosters. The brighter the vegetables and fruits, the more nutrients and minerals they contain. Flax seeds are a great source of omega 3 fatty acids, which boost fertility. Omega 3 may also be added to yogurts and even breads; the label should indicate this.

Fiber should be consumed daily. Vegetables, such as pumpkin or peas, are good sources of fibers. Whole grains may be particularly helpful for women with polycystic ovary syndrome, which is a frequent cause of infertility. Antioxidants can be found in blueberries and red peppers and should be consumed to eliminate the toxins from the body. Folic acid influences the development of sexual hormones and can be found in lemons, limes or oranges. Hydration is essential to increase the chances of success. A woman trying to get pregnant should drink at least 6 glasses (1,5 liters) of water per day.

Foods to Avoid

Mercury is not recommended, so fish should be avoided. However, fish with low mercury levels (i.e. trout, haddock, salmon) may be consumed, as they contain omega 3 fatty acids. Other foods to avoid include:

  • Foods containing saturated fats
  • Preservatives and chemicals, as these affect the hormonal balance
  • Diet pops containing artificial sweeteners
  • Caffeine may be consumed but in limited amounts, as it is a blood vessel constrictor so the blood flow to the uterus will be reduced
  • Refined carbohydrates such as pasta, rice and white bread may be consumed, but in limited amounts.
  • Alcohol and smoking should be avoided.

Supplements

The presence of vitamins and minerals in the diet can have a great influence on the fertility, so it is important to get some supplements. Calcium and B12 supplements are ideal to facilitate conceiving. Omega 3 fatty acids may also be administered to increase fertility. Multivitamins that contain zinc, folic acid and the B vitamins should be taken to increase fertility. Zinc has been proven to increase fertility both in men and women. Iron supplements are recommended for women that have a vegetarian diet, as iron is necessary to avoid anemia after pregnancy.
