Signs and Symptoms of Early Pregnancy

The degree and presence of common signs and symptoms of early pregnancy differ from one woman to the next, and can even vary from one woman?s first pregnancy to her second or subsequent pregnancies. The early pregnancy symptom that is the most prevalent way women realize they are pregnant is a missed or delayed menstrual cycle; however there are several other early signs of pregnancy that can occur prior to missing your period.

It is important to note that some women will experience early signs and symptoms of pregnancy within one to two weeks after conception, whereas other women might be pregnant for several weeks before experiencing telltale signs. Because symptoms associated with pregnancy can sometimes be subtle or caused by something else, it is important for sexually active women to monitor their menstrual cycle and other symptoms and to take a pregnancy test as soon as symptoms and signs of pregnancy are present.

One of the earliest signs of pregnancy experienced by some women is cramping and spotting during the implantation process, which can occur as soon as six days after conception. Some women also may experience fatigue as early as one week after conception or swollen, sore or tender breasts as early as one to two weeks after becoming pregnant. Approximately two weeks after conception is when most women experience a change in their menstrual cycle, which often is a missed or delayed period, but some women will continue to experience periods during pregnancy, although they are typically shorter and lighter. Because some women do continue to menstruate, it is important to watch for other signs and symptoms of pregnancy and changes in menstruation to detect pregnancy as early as possible.

Between two weeks and two months after conception, many women experience what is commonly referred to as morning sickness and is characterized by nausea that often occurs in the morning, but can occur any time during the day. During this period, it is also common for women to experience headaches, backaches, darkening areolas, frequent urination and the beginnings of food cravings, all of which are commonly present throughout many women?s pregnancies. Additional signs and symptoms of early pregnancy include sensitivity to smells, aversions to certain foods, constipation, feeling faint, heartburn and weight gain.

If you think you may be pregnant, you should also keep in mind that no one knows your body like you do. Even if you are not experiencing any of the common signs and symptoms of early pregnancy, if you just feel pregnant, this feeling should not be disregarded. It is very important to take a pregnancy test as soon as you begin to suspect you are pregnant.

The earlier you confirm your pregnancy the sooner you can begin to receive prenatal care, take prenatal vitamins, plan and prepare for a healthy pregnancy, and make important lifestyle changes, such as avoiding alcohol, nicotine and caffeine, and reevaluating medications and supplements you are currently taking that may affect your pregnancy.
