Do I Need To Use the Brand Robitussin?

As many know, Robitussin is a popular brand of medicine to use for the treatment of the common cold and flu. In addition to relieving the symptoms of the cold and flu, Robitussin can actually improve a woman's chances of getting pregnant, as well. Robitussin loosens up the cervical mucus in a woman's body, which in turn makes it easier for her to conceive. Although Robitussin is one of the most popular brands of expectorants, it is not the only drug containing the ingredient known as guaifenesin. Guaifenesin is the actual ingredient in Robitussin that loosens the cervical mucus.

Because there are several other brands of cough medicines and expectorants that contain the ingredient guaifenesin, a woman does not need to use the brand Robitussin to increase her chances of pregnancy. Using any type of expectorant with guaifenesin as the active ingredient will also help a woman conceive.

Taking Guaifenesin

Robitussin is a popular brand of cough medicine that contains the active ingredient that aids in conception. Although Robitussin contains what you need, you do not need to use only this brand to conceive. Any generic brand of cough medicine that contains guaifenesin as the main active ingredient is sufficient.

This does not mean that you can purchase any cough medicine on the market, however. It is important to pay close attention to the ingredients listed on the bottle before making your final selection. Do not select cough medicines or syrups that contain decongestants, as these will only dry up the cervical mucus and will not help you conceive. You must select a cough medicine that lists guaifenesin as it's only active ingredient. Any other ingredients in the medicine can interfere with the guaifenesin that helps loosen the cervical mucus that aids in conception.

How Much to Take

Women who are trying to conceive should take two teaspoons by mouth, three times daily. Women taking guaifenesin should also drink more water to help loosen up the cervical mucus and get the medicine moving through the body. Water alone also helps loosen up cervical mucus in the body and should always be used in women who are trying to get pregnant. If you notice that your cervical mucus still appears too thick, you may increase the dosage amount to the maximum amount safely recommended on the bottle. Do not take more that is recommended, however, as you can overdose on cough syrup.

When to Take Guaifenesin

Women should take the cough medicine containing guaifenesin five days before ovulation and also during the day of ovulation. Doing so will help the sperm live longer inside the woman's body and in turn will increase chances of pregnancy. Dosages should be consistent and taken at approximately the same time everyday. Remember not to forget or skip a dose.

Men and Guaifenesin

Men who take cough medicine with guaifenesin may also benefit from it in that it can help loosen up the semen and fluids he needs for conception. It is usually more effective if the woman takes the medicine, however.
