Does IVF Work to Cause Ovulation in Women with PCOS?

PCOS is the abbreviated form for polycystic ovarian syndrome, a condition that affects many women and is a major cause of infertility in women that have the condition.

PCOS

PCOS is a medical condition that's characterized by irregular bleeding during a menstrual cycle or absence of bleeding in a menstrual cycle, infertility, weight gain and hirsuitism. Women suffering from PCOS generally have polycystic ovaries and suffer from anovulation (lack of ovulation). The condition is characterized by an abnormal production of either the luteinizing hormone (LH) or the follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) that can adversely impact fertility.

IVF

In vitro fertilization is a form of treatment that's used on women suffering from PCOS who wish to conceive. It's also used when other fertility treatment strategies have failed. The success rate of this radical procedure depends on the duration of infertility, the quality of the sperm, and the age and weight of the woman. The procedure involves the fertilization of the egg by the sperm outside the uterus and subsequent implantation of the fertilized egg in the uterus.

Risks and Success Rates of IVF

The risks associated with IVF include multiple births and ovarian hyper-stimulation syndrome.

The pregnancy success rates for women suffering from PCOS are extremely high if the IVF treatment is conducted at a high quality fertility center.
