Fertility Treatment: The Success Rates of Ganirelex

There are several possible reasons why a woman or man experiences a loss of fertility. Men can experience a decrease in sperm production which can be treated with drugs. Women can experience a decrease in egg production for a variety of reasons. Hormone imbalances causing ovarian follicles, where eggs are produced, to stop producing eggs is another main cause of fertility loss.

What Ganirelex Does

Your doctor may decide that your best bet for having a baby is in vitro fertilization. In this process, you will be administered a gonadotropin releasing hormone antagonist to stimulate the production of eggs. Ganirelex is then administered to control ovulation and egg release. Ganirelex is a chemical that causes your body to completely stop producing the hormones that cause egg release and ovulation. Egg production will be carefully monitored and eggs will be harvested just before ovulation occurs. These eggs will be placed into laboratory dishes where sperm will be introduced. Once an embryo begins to form, one will be reintroduced into the uterus. This embryo will hopefully "take" and begin to mature through a normal pregnancy. Ganirelex is preferred by many doctors specializing in reproductive therapies, because of the amount of patient convenience it introduces into a fertility enhancing program. This is because of the shorter administration cycle required by its use.

Possible Side Effects of Use

Ganirelex is a drug that causes a menopause-like state to exist within your body. Typical side effects will mimic symptoms of menopause. These will include hot flashes, mood swings, loss of libido and vaginal dryness.

Ganirelex is only one of many different drugs that your endocrinologist may choose when you enter into an in vitro fertilization program. In some studies, Ganirelex has been shown to be 77 percent effective in treating infertility.
