How Natural Fertility Supplements Work

The term natural fertility supplements refers to the use of vitamins, minerals and herbs to enhance the prospect of achieving pregnancy for couples who are experiencing difficulties in this area. Supplements are designed to boost naturally occurring substances in the body and may be used as a potentially viable approach to fertility as an alternative to more expensive and intrusive methods.

Motility

There are certain supplements that have been shown to increase the motility of the sperm. Motility refers to the endurance and capability of the sperm to reach the egg. These supplements include: the amino acid L-carnitine, a component of every cell co-enzime Q10, folic acid or folate and the herb maca root powder.

Sperm Count

There is some cross over in that various supplements affecting sperm motility also assist in sperm production, more commonly referred to as sperm count. These include: the L-carnitine, co-enzime-Q10, folic acid and maca Root powder, although there are other supplements that may also assist in increasing sperm count. They are: vitamin E, the minerals zinc and selenium and the amino acid L-arginine.

Menstrual Problems and Hormonal Irregularities

The following supplements could assist women who may be experiencing menstruation difficulties or hormonal imbalances: vitamin C, vitamins B6 and B12 and the maca root powder. Selected studies have shown that the maca Root may stimulate the natural production of hormones rather than adding hormones to the body. Other herbs, such as dong qui and wild jam, may stimulate the user’s libido, although not a lot is known about these herbs and it is suggested a qualified herbalist be consulted before using.

Developing Embryo

Vitamin A, along with being considered an antioxidant, is necessary at conception for the development of the embryo, although high doses may cause harm once the baby has started to grow within the mother. The use of vitamin A should only be used under the direction of a physician. Free radicals are produced when oxidization occurs within the body. They, in turn, proceed to damage cells they come in contact with. This is a natural occurrence. Antioxidants combat the free radicals disposing of them in the process. As indicated the antioxidants that may benefit the fertility process include vitamins A, C, E and selenium.

Blood Consistency

Iron is crucial to the integrity of the red blood cells and is an important factor in the transportation of oxygen. Studies have indicated that a deficiency in iron may be a contributing factor to low fertility.

Increased Blood Flow

Asian ginseng may increase blood flow throughout the body, including the reproduction areas of both male and female. There have been limited studies regarding the effectiveness of natural fertility supplements, and as a result, there are no guarantees their use will be as effective as traditional fertility treatments. It has been further advised by the medical community that a physician monitor the use of some of these supplements as over use could result in a toxic level within the body.
