Infertility: 7 Questions for the Woman during the Doctor Apointment

Infertility may be an issue for a number of couples. If you are facing this issue, you will have to visit a fertility clinic. During the doctor appointment, you will be asked a number of questions and you will also have to go through an exam and a few tests. If you are worried about the questions, you can expect the followings.

1. Questions about Your Menstruation

The fertility doctor will have to establish if your menstruation is regular. Note down the dates of your last few menstruations (ideally the last 6, so that the doctor can find a pattern).

If you have missed your period and you are not pregnant, this may be due to a medical condition, which needs to be detected.

2. Questions about Your Medical History

Firstly, you will be asked about your age, as age can be a factor in determining your fertility. You will be asked about any possible diseases that you’ve had, including STDs and if you are under any type of medication presently. Your medical history is important, as it may affect your fertility.

You should also mention if you have had other babies, abortions or surgeries. You may expect questions about your parent’s health condition and possibly about whether there is a history of infertility in your family (i.e. aunts or uncles).

3. Questions about the Attempts to Get Pregnant

Your fertility doctor will ask you about your attempts to get pregnant:

  • How often you have sex, especially during the middle part of your cycle
  • How long have you been trying to get pregnant
  • Whether you use any methods to calculate your fertile days
  • Whether you are using lubricants during intercourse

4. Questions about Your Job and Stress Level

You can expect questions about your job, as the doctor has to establish the level of stress that you may be under. Your job may also involve exposure to toxic materials, which can also influence fertility.

Let the doctor know if you are stressed, which can also be caused by the failed attempt to conceive.

5. Questions about Vices

You will be asked about whether you have any vices such as smoking, drinking alcohol or consuming recreational drugs. These can affect your fertility, and the doctor can give you some tips to get rid of these, at least while you’re trying to conceive and during the pregnancy.

6. Questions about Diet and Lifestyle

Expect questions about your diet and what you usually eat. Food can influence your fertility. Questions about whether you exercise or have a sedentary life can also be common during your doctor’s appointment.

7. Questions about Your Relationship and Your Partner

Your doctor can also ask you if you are happy in your relationship and may also be interested in some specifics about your partner (his job, diet, lifestyle, whether he is a smoker).

All these questions will help pinpointing the potential problems that hinder you from conceiving.
