Infertility: 7 Questions You'll be Asked as a Couple during the Doctor Apointment

Infertility is a problem that affects various couples and the culprit can be identified by a fertility doctor. The very first stage of the culprit identification procedure is a discussion with the doctor, which you and your partner will both have to have separately and then together.

When talking to the fertility doctor, you and your partner will be asked a few questions about your medical history and lifestyle. You will then be asked a number of questions that concern both of you. You can find out what these questions are and prepare to give the best answers.

1. How Long Have You Tried to Get Pregnant?

The fertility doctor will want to know when you started to have intercourse without using protection. If you have only tried for a couple of months, there may not be any problems and you need to take more time trying to get pregnant. However, if you’ve tried for more than a year (or 6 months if you are older than 35), there may be a problem that has to be identified and treated.

2. How Often Do You Have Intercourse?

The frequency of intercourse is important, as if you don’t have sex during the fertile periods, there are minimal chances of conceiving. It’s also important that you know when your fertile days are.

3. How Do You Track Your Fertile Days?

Having intercourse during the fertile days is highly important, as these are the days when the conception is possible. Typically, the ovulation occurs approximately 14 days after the first day of your menstruation and the most fertile period is two days before the ovulation day, the ovulation day and two days after the ovulation. However, there may be slight variations each month.

Your fertility doctor may ask you how you track down your fertile days (i.e. basal temperature, calendar or other methods).

4. Do You Use Lubricants?

If you use lubricants during intercourse, these may contain spermicides, which kill the sperm and conception is not possible. Your doctor may ask you also about the type of lubricant you use, as some may be safe to use. You can bring the package or note down the type of lubricant you use.

5. Do You Smoke or Drink?

Smoking and drinking can have a negative impact on fertility both for men and women. Your fertility doctor may ask you if you smoke or drink and how many cigarettes or drinks per day you have.

6. Are You Stressed?

Stress can affect you or your partner in many ways and may also be a libido killer, affecting fertility as well. Your doctor will want to know if you are stressed and the sources of stress.

7. Are You Happy with Your Relationship?

Not all fertility doctors ask this question, but some may. Being happy in your relationship and willing to have a baby can be important for your mental well being, which may influence your physical condition.
