Post-Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection Lifestyle

The Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection is an assisted reproductive technique that involves a micro procedure and injecting an egg with a single or several sperm cells. If you have chosen such as procedure, you should be aware about the lifestyle after the Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection and the insertion of the egg in your uterus, so that you have high chances of giving birth to a healthy baby.

After the Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection

The Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection procedure involves taking a sperm cell from the male and an egg from you. These will be extracted prior to the Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection procedure. You may have to take a few hormones to stimulate the maturation of 1 or several eggs.

After the Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection procedure, the fertility doctor will monitor the evolution of the egg and establish if the fertilization has taken place. If the egg has been fertilized, it will be placed in your uterus. This will happen under anesthesia and it will take under 20 minutes, but you will have to stay in the clinic for another 60 minutes or more, to make sure the fertilized egg stays put.

During the following days, you should avoid exercising and performing strenuous activities, to prevent a spontaneous abortion. The first 3 months will be crucial for the baby, and it is more common to have a miscarriage during this first trimester.

Diet Post Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection

Your diet after the Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection should be balanced and should include vitamins, minerals and essential nutrients. The fertility doctor will recommend a few supplements.

Try to get all the proteins you need, as these are essential for the baby’s development. Avoid alcoholic beverages, smoking, caffeine (coffee, tea or pops), non prescription drugs and even herbal remedies, which can jeopardize the pregnancy.

Activity after Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection

You should avoid strenuous activities throughout the pregnancy, so as to prevent a miscarriage. If you want to keep in shape, you can take walks or swim. If your job involves lifting heavy things, you should arrange so that you get some time off work or do a different type of work. You should protect yourself from viruses and diseases, as these can also lead to abortion or affect the fetus.

Regular Checkups

To monitor your pregnancy, you should visit your fertility doctor more often (i.e. once per month), so that you make sure the baby is developing normally and there are no complications. Ask any questions you may have. You may also get informed on the delivery, which will be as in mothers that have conceived naturally. Notify your fertility doctor if you observe any abnormal symptoms such as vaginal bleeding, spotting or other discharges.

Often, after an Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection treatment, you may have twins or several babies. This is a side effect of the procedure, as in some cases, several sperm cells are injected to make sure the fertilization takes place.
