Menstral Cycle Abnormalities That May Cause Inferility: Metrorrhagia

Infertility may be caused by the irregularity in the menstrual cycle. There are many menstrual cycle abnormalities that can interfere with fertility and the dates of ovulation, making it difficult to determine the fertile dates and to conceive. Metrorrhagia is a condition described as bleeding outside the regular menstrual periods.

Metrorrhagia and Fertility

Women that have metrorrhagia experience uterine bleeding between the menstrual bleedings. Metrorrhagia may be temporary and occur only during a few months, but it may also be a chronic condition. Typically, metrorrhagia is caused by a condition such as hormonal imbalance, fibroids, cysts, polyps or even uterine tumors. This may lead to infertility. However, metrorrhagia may also indicate an occasional ovulation outside the normal cycle or the beginning of a pregnancy, when the embryo is implanted in the uterus. In some cases, metrorrhagia signals that menopause is near, so this may also be a warning sign for women that get early menopause.

Treatment for Metrorrhagia

Metrorrhagia can be solved if the underlying condition is detected. Blood tests can be performed to detect any signs of a hormonal imbalance or other abnormal results that may be indicative of a medical condition (i.e., an increased number of white blood cells due to an infection). X-rays and ultrasounds are also recommended to see if there are any tumors, cysts or polyps in the reproductive system. The treatment may range from antibiotics administered for infections to contraceptive pills or even surgery, depending on what causes the bleeding.
