Nutritional Counseling Effectiveness

Nutritional counseling for the treatment of infertility is fairly new in the U.S. At this time, only a few scientific studies on treatment effectiveness have been completed. Efficacy rates are difficult to estimate, because of treatment variations and techniques. Moreover, the few studies that do exist involve small numbers of women.

Unexplained Infertility and Nutritional Counseling

Overall, efficacy rates appear to be higher for women with unexplained infertility disorders. Many women in this category suffer from conditions that suppress normal hormonal functions. Some of these conditions include obesity, menstrual irregularities, high levels of stress or hormonal imbalances.

In the case of obesity, nutritionists combine high nutrient weight loss plans with exercise. Obesity tends to impair hormone production and nutritionists work to restore balance in the body. Some practitioners will also include the use of herbs in their treatment plans.

Similarly, women with hormone imbalances or menstrual irregularities often benefit from changes to their diet. High levels of stress can also contribute to hormone suppression. Women with higher levels of stress often do not eat nutrient rich meals, and nutritionists can recommend lifestyle compatible nutrient rich diets. Most nutritionists will combine a diet plan with techniques to reduce stress.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a disorder in which the normal levels of hormone production are inhibited. The cause of this syndrome is not entirely understood. Symptoms and the degree of severity vary among women.

It is believed that PCOS is linked to obesity and insulin imbalance; however, not all women displaying symptoms are obese, insulin resistant or diabetic. Because PCOS is linked to hormonal imbalance, nutritionists design treatment plans that include whole grains, while excluding processed and refined foods. High nutrient plans may also include additional vitamins and herbs. Good nutrition may restore hormone production to normal levels.

Women with PCOS who are obese, may suffer hormonal imbalances associated with weight. Most nutritionists will treat the condition with a plan that includes low glycemic index foods and exercise. Many women successfully conceive once proper hormone levels are restored.

Male Infertility and Nutritional Counseling

Men who suffer from low sperm count or low motility rates may increase their chance of fertility through proper nutrition. Many men suffer from inadequate nutrition. Too much fast food, fats and poor eating habits result in a lack of the necessary vitamins and minerals needed for normal sperm production.

After analyzing a man’s current diet, a nutritionist can determine which nutrients are lacking. The inclusion of sufficient amounts of vitamins C and E, Zinc and microelements can increase sperm quality and quantity. Men must stay on the high nutrient diet for several months. Most men can expect to see results in 3 to 6 months.

Nutritional Counseling and Intrauterine Insemination

Many women combine nutritional counseling with conventional artificial insemination procedures. Changes to the diet can often relieve uncomfortable symptoms associated with fertility medication. In some cases, nutritionists can make changes to the diet that will aid in insemination by increasing blood flow and decreasing stress.

Nutritionists specializing in infertility work closely with your doctor. Consultation between a doctor and nutritionist is very important. Your nutritionist will create a treatment plan that is compatible with your medical treatment and medications.
