Wedge Resection vs. Ovarian Drilling

Ovarian wedge resection and ovarian drilling are the two main types of surgeries that are used to treat Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). PCOS is one of the most common endocrine disorders among women of reproductive age, and is the most general cause of endocrine-related female infertility. In this health condition, there is an imbalance of female sex hormones which can affect the periods, hormone levels and ovulation of a woman.

Reduce Level of Androgens and Restore Menstrual Cycle

Both surgeries reduce androgen levels and restore the menstrual cycle, but wedge resection is not often used or recommended these days. Ovarian wedge resection is a major abdominal surgery which involves partial removal of the ovary. Although this procedure may be more successful, ovarian drilling is considered to be a less invasive procedure with less risk of scarring. In the case of wedge resection, there is a greater risk of scarring and damage of the reproductive organs and ovaries. Ovarian drilling is typically done through a laparoscope under short general anesthesia; patients can leave the hospital on the same day of surgery and resume normal activities within 24 hours.

Before You Have Surgery for PCOS

There are many factors you should think about and discuss with your doctor before having any of these surgeries. Getting a second opinion is very much recommended as well. To minimize risks, choose a surgeon who has good experience in performing these procedures.
