IVF Troubles

Yet another multiple birth due to In Vitro Fertilization has made headlines, but this time in Australia. A lesbian couple who sought out one child with IVF has sued the fertility clinic for implanting two babies, which ultimately resulted in a "damaged relationship." The angry couple is also causing a stir among industry and government officials because many couples are complaining they do not want multiple births yet clinics are implanting multiple embryos.

News.Com.Au has said, "In the first Australian case of its kind, the Melbourne parents of the twin girls sued Canberra obstetrician Sydney Robert Armellin for implanting two embryos instead of the requested one. During the initial proceedings, the ACT Supreme Court heard that following the twins' birth, the mother had lost her capacity to love. The couple's relationship had also suffered as they became mired in everyday tasks associated with raising two children."

With the recent influx of news stories, criticisms, and harsh commentary about IVF and fertility clinics, there is a chance and possibility that governments in the US and Australia will stiffen embryo implanting laws – and attempt to limit the number of children infertile couples can have using IVF.
