Nesting and Preparing the Babyメs Space

Nesting and Preparing the Baby?s Space

One of the most exciting and enjoyable aspects of pregnancy is preparing a place for the new baby. Universally, expectant mothers of both the human and animal variety seem to instinctively desire to create a comfortable environment for their soon-to-arrive creations. Sociologists refer to this behavior as "nesting."

Although nesting behaviors vary from person to person, many follow similar patterns. As the pregnant woman gets closer to the due date for her baby, she may feel inclined to clean and organize the space the baby will be sleeping in, and the whole house or residence in general. Also, many women are more attracted to soft colors and textures, and decorate the interior of a baby?s room accordingly. These inclinations biologically lead soon-to-be mothers to take practical steps towards their baby?s safety and comfort.

It seems that nature intends for a new mom to prepare for the coming changes in her life, but these preparations should be made carefully. Some actions taken in preparing the baby?s space could be dangerous to mother or child. Paints, particularly those which are oil based or those containing lead should be avoided. Pregnant women should also be careful about scraping paint from walls or window sills in older houses, as these may also contain lead. Pregnant women should also consider staying away from the fumes of harsh chemicals such as oven cleaners and bug sprays because some of these have not been tested to see if there is a link with birth defects.

Any nesting activity that involves ladders or climbing should also be turned over to someone else. A pregnant mother sometimes has more trouble with coordination and balance than she did prior to conception, particularly during the last trimester when nesting is most prevalent. Every new mother wants to be assured that she has prepared a space for her infant that is safe, comfortable, and inviting, and the nesting instinct is nature?s way of guaranteeing that she will do her best.
