Embryology Services
ICSI
Intracytoplasmic injection of a sperm is now a very common and widely accepted procedure whereby a single sperm is placed into the egg. This procedure can override many causes of male and female infertility. Men with only a few sperm (<10) can now have children! Our lab director, Charles Cornwell, ELD is an expert in this procedure.
BLASTOCYST CULTURE
Our ultimate goal is to transfer as few embryos as possible to help you become pregnant. While twins is often safe, a singleton pregnancy is the safest. In order to transfer fewer embryos we must be able to select the best ones. In specific cases selecting on Day 5 of laboratory culture in the blastocyst stage of development allows us to select the more advanced embryo(s) for transfer. This is not best in all cases, however.
ASSISTED HATCHING
All embryos are contained within a coat called the zona pellucida. In certain situations such as advanced age, the zona pellucida may become too thick or hard to allow the embryo to "hatch" out and implant into the uterus. In these cases we can open a small hole in the zona to facilitate the natural "hatch" and therefore increase the likelihood of implantation
CRYOPRESERVATION
Our laboratory has the expertise to cryopreserve healthy appearing embryos that were not used during the fresh ART cycle. These embryos can later be thawed and transferred to have a second child without having to do the whole ART cycle all over again. We also can store sperm for use at a later date.
CRYOPRESERVATION STORAGE
We have state of the art storage facilities. While frozen sperm and embryos appear be viable for more than a decade, our policy is that it must be the patient's intention to use the frozen embryos and sperm within 3 years.
PRE IMPLANTATION GENETIC DIAGNOSIS
Certain situations require the knowledge of the chromosomal makeup of each embryo before they can be transferred to the patient's uterus. These situations most likely involve passing on certain genetic diseases.
