PHYSICIANS

Bradley S. Hurst, MD

Director, Assisted Reproduction Program Associate Director, Reproductive Endocrinology

Dr. Hurst is subspecialty board-certified in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (REI) and has been the director of the IVF Program at Carolinas Medical Center since 1999. He attended the University of Texas Medical School in Houston, performed his OB/GYN residency at Duke University and completed his fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology at Johns Hopkins. He is an active member of national medical societies including the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, the Society of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (SREI), the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology and the Society of Reproductive Surgeons. He served two terms as Chair of the SREI Practice Committee and is a nationally-elected member of the SREI Board of Directors. He has published more than 100 articles in leading medical journals and textbooks, is co-editor of a medical textbook, “Disorders of Menstruation.” His awards include life membership in Who’s Who in Medicine and Best Doctors in America. Dr. Hurst’s special medical interests include in vitro fertilization, infertility, and minimally invasive surgery including Fertiloscopy, an exciting new surgery to diagnose and treat infertility.

Paul B. Marshburn, MD

Director, Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility

Dr. Marshburn is subspecialty board-certified in Reproductive Endocrinology. Prior to joining Carolinas Medical Center in 1994, he served as Director of the In vitro Fertilization (IVF) Program at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. Dr. Marshburn attended Duke University, Emory University Graduate School and School of Medicine. His OB/GYN residency training occurred at Duke University Medical Center, and he received his fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Fertility from the University of North Carolina. Dr. Marshburn is an active member in the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the American Society of Reproductive Medicine, Society of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, and the Society for Gynecologic Investigation. He has published greater than

66 papers in leading medical journals. Dr. Marshburn has been named to the Best Doctors in America, Castle Connoly’s Top Doctors and Who’s Who in Medicine, each year since 1995. His current research interests include endometrial and embryonic responses during implantation and spermatozoal characteristics related to normal ovum fertilization. His major clinical interests include assisted reproductive technology, endometriosis, male factor infertility, polycystic ovary syndrome and advanced laparoscopy and microsurgery.

Michelle Matthews, MD

Associate Director, Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility

Michelle Matthews, MD received her medical degree from Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine, completed her residency at Summa Health Systems in Ohio, and then completed her fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology at Rush Presbyterian in Chicago. She is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology, and subspecialty board certified in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. Her awards include both the American Professors of Obstetrics and Gynecology national resident and medical student teaching awards, as well as being listed in the Best Doctors in America, Top Doctors North Carolina and Charlotte Top Doctors. She is an active member in a number of state, regional and national medical societies involved with reproductive medicine including the American Society of Reproductive Medicine. She has published numerous papers in leading medical journals and lectures nationally on several reproductive topics. Her clinical interested include polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), in vitro fertilization, and fertility preservation for cancer patients. Her hobbies include playing piano, triathlons, and volunteering including being the medical director for the Charlotte Avon Walk for Breast Cancer.

Rebecca S. Usadi, MD

Associate Director, Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility

Dr. Usadi is subspecialty board-certified in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (REI). She attended Duke University School of Medicine, completed a residency Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, Georgia, and completed an REI fellowship at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She was on faculty for three years at Greenville Hospital University Medical Center as Assistant Professor of Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of South Carolina School of Medicine and joined the Carolinas Medical Center faculty in 2006. She was recipient of the 2005 Clinical Research/ Reproductive Scientist Training scholarship (CREST), a joint program of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), the Clinical Research Training Program (CRTP) at Duke University and the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM). She is a primary investigator for the Reproductive Medicine Network, an NIH funded multicenter research group and is currently enrolling patients in the Pregnancy in PCOS trial II. Dr. Usadi has numerous publications in peer reviewed journals and was a member of the Patient Education Committee at ASRM. Her interests include infertility, in vitro fertilization, advanced laparoscopy and hysteroscopy, obesity and polycystic ovary syndrome and lectures nationally on many of these topics. Dr Usadi has been awarded Top Doctor North Carolina and enjoys caring for her patients and helping them through the process of fertility treatment.

We believe that open communication is one of the most important elements of fertility treatment. This is why our entire staff is committed to listening to your concerns and keeping you fully informed throughout your entire treatment plan. We will work with you one on one, explaining every aspect of your treatment, your procedure and answering any and all questions you may have.

 

During your first visit, you and your physician will discuss your medical history and concerns, then evaluate the next steps. If needed an examination may be performed. The physicians and nurses will take the time to discuss with you available treatment options, so that together you can develop a plan that addresses your individual fertility needs.

When “high tech” treatment is needed, our physicians provide comprehensive care, seeking out the most effective new technologies with the best trained andrology and embryology specialists in the region. Our services include:
