Joseph E. Martin, M.D., FACOG
Medical Director
Joseph E. Martin, a native of Texas, earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Zoology in 1959 from the University of Texas in Austin, Texas, and a M.D. degree in 1963 from the University of Texas in Galveston, Texas. He completed his internship at Herman Hospital in Houston, Texas in 1964. He then served as a Captain in the United States Air Force from 1964 to 1966, where he worked in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Martin then completed a three-year specialty training program in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, Texas.
Dr. Martin joined the faculty of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 1969 as an Instructor, and subsequently as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. During that time, his sponsored research involved study of the actions of hormones at the cellular level. Dr. Martin entered the private practice of Obstetrics and Gynecology in San Antonio in 1972. He is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and is certified by the Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He has served as Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Methodist Hospital. Dr. Martin helped form the Fertility Program at Methodist Hospital in 1986 and served as its Medical Director until 1990.
Over 20-years ago, Dr. Martin formed the Fertility Center of San Antonio (a private, office-based center with SART affiliation), and serves currently as theMedical Director. Dr. Martin has personally attended thousands of cycles (IVF, GIFT, GIFT), and several thousand cycles of induction of ovulation with intrauterine insemination.
The Fertility Center of San Antonio was one of the first programs in the country to be office-based, and has had many first events, including the first ICSI pregnancy in the Southwest. FCSA is accredited by the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM). Dr. Martin is an active member of AIUM.

Gregory S. Neal, M.D. FACOG
Reproductive Endocrinologist
Gregory S. Neal, a native of Texas, earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology in 1982 from Texas A&M University, a Master of Science degree in Biochemistry in 1984 from Texas A&M University, and an M.D. degree in 1988 from Texas A&M College of Medicine. He completed his internship and residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology in the United States Air Force at Wilford Hall Medical Center, San Antonio, Texas in 1992. Dr. Neal then proceeded to New York where he completed a fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology in 1994 at The New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center under the direction of Dr. Zev Rosenwaks.
Dr. Neal joined the faculty in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Wilford Hall Medical Center in 1994 and served as a Major in the United States Air Force until May 1999. As the Chief of Reproductive Endocrinology, he was instrumental in developing a full service infertility program with referrals from throughout the United States. He established the highly successful Wilford Hall Medical Center IVF program and served as the Medical Director from its inception in 1996 through his separation from the Air Force in 1999. He is the author of numerous scientific articles and has presented his research at national and international meetings. He is a Fellow of the the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and is Board Certified in Reproductive Endocrinology and Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Dr. Neal"s early research interests included evaluation of methods of stimulating high responder patients in IVF cycles. Recent interests include work evaluating the predictive value of basal serum insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 (IGF-BP3) for IVF outcome and evaluation of the relationship between cumulus cell apoptosis and markers of ovarian response and reserve. His special interests include infertility, advanced operative laparoscopy and hysteroscopy, tubal microsurgery, hormone replacement therapy, and in vitro fertilization.
Dr. Neal"s most recent publications involve studies with the development of brief stress management support groups for couples undergoing IVF.
Fertility Center of San Antonio is accredited by the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM). Dr. Neal is an active member of AIUM.

Thomas B Pool, P.H.D., HCLD
Scientific Director
Dr. Pool is the embryologist and director of the assisted reproductive technology laboratory of the center. He is a native Texan and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture in 1970 and a Master of Arts degree in Biology in 1973 from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. He then attended the University of Virginia as a National Institutes of Health predoctoral trainee in developmental biology and was awarded the Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1976.
Dr. Pool completed a two-year postdoctoral fellowship in cell biology at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 1978. He joined the faculty of the University of Texas Medical School that same year and was promoted to Associate Professor in 1984. His research focused upon the basic mechanisms governing cell growth and included investigations into ways to improve embryo growth using nonhuman primates as a model system for study. In 1986, he became the Embryologist and Laboratory Director for the Fertility Program at Methodist Hospital in San Antonio and was appointed as the Program Director in 1989.
