While gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT) and in vitro fertilization (IVF) are alike in many ways, they also have their differences. Similar to IVF, GIFT consists of removing eggs from your ovaries and blending them with your partner’s sperm or a donor’s sperm, then returning them to your body. Unlike IVF, however, after the eggs and sperm are mixed, they are not transferred to a laboratory dish, rather they are quickly relocated to your fallopian tubes via laparoscopic surgery. This means fertilization will occur in your fallopian tubes and just like a natural pregnancy, the fertilized egg will move down the tubes and develop into an embryo, then eventually implant in your uterus.
If you have at least one healthy fallopian tube, or if you have fertility issues but would like for fertilization to happen inside your body rather than a laboratory dish, such as the case with IVF, then GIFT may be an option.
