During zygote intrafallopian transfer (ZIFT), your doctor removes your eggs from your ovaries and mixes them with sperm in a laboratory dish. Once the sperm fertilizes the egg, the doctor transfers the fertilized egg cells to your fallopian tubes using a specialized instrument (laparoscope). Just like natural pregnancy, a fertilized egg cell (also known as a zygote) develops into an embryo and then makes its way down the fallopian tube so that it can implant into your uterus.
ZIFT is considered the most invasive assisted reproductive technology (ART). However, if your fallopian tubes are healthy and undamaged, if you haven’t been able to conceive via in vitro fertilization (IVF), or if male infertility is an issue (e.g., low motility and sperm count), this procedure may be suggested to you.
