Could the tubal ligation I had 14 years ago be causing pain, tenderness, and bloating?

I had a tubal ligation 14 yrs ago. My period is late by 2 weeks. I took an at-home pregnancy test, but it was negative. I then went to the doctor for a urine test, but it too was negative. Now I am bloated and have tenderness on my right side. It seems as though the pain/tenderness gets worse when I'm laying or sitting. Could the tubal ligation be to blame? Would a reversal help?

Hello and thank you for your question. You are smart to seek care from your physician when having such symptoms. You are also smart to rule out pregnancy, for a tubal ligation can fail and lead to an ectopic pregnancy. Perhaps you should ask for a blood hCG test to be more certain. In addition, there are many other reasons for your symptoms other than the old tubal ligation. You should be thoroughly evaluated by your OB-GYN and even consider having an ultrasound. You could have ovarian cysts or tumors, intestinal problems, bladder problems, or even uterine problems like myomas. Be thorough and look for the more common causes of these symptoms.

I doubt that the symptoms you are having this long after your tubal ligation are related. More likely, you may have an ovarian cyst. I recommend that your doctor order an ultrasound exam and do further testing.

I had the Hulka clips put on during a tubal ligation procedure when I was 24 years old. I am now 30 and my husband and I want another child. We are uncertain if my irregular periods are being caused by some of the Hulka clips coming off, or maybe the tube has grown around them. Is this likely and would either cause irregular periods? Also, would tubal reversal be a good option if we are considering having another child?
