I've had my tubes tied for 18 years, am I a good canidate for a tubal reversal?

I'm a 44 yr old mother of 4 healthy children. At age 26 I had my tubes tied, clipped and burned. Now that my children are grown I want to have 2 more kids. Am I a good candidate for a tubal reversal? What are my chances of conceiving after the procedure?

Thank you for your question. At 44 years of age, you are not a good candidate because the chance of pregnancy is very low; you may not benefit from the procedure. Your better option is in vitro fertilization (IVF) with an egg donor. You see, your eggs were made 44 years ago and every year you have a higher chance of making a genetically abnormal egg. For example, at 44 with your own eggs, the chance of pregnancy with in vitro fertilization (IVF) would be less than 2%. Because of this, your chances are increased if you use a viable egg donor.

At our practice, we would perform tubal reversal for you because if you are ovulating, then you can become pregnant. It would be important for you to understand that even with ovulation and regular periods, the chance of pregnancy after reversal after age 44 is less than 5%. The best chance of pregnancy is IVF with donor eggs.

I had the Hulka clips put on during a tubal ligation procedure when I was 24 years old. I am now 30 and my husband and I want another child. We are uncertain if my irregular periods are being caused by some of the Hulka clips coming off, or maybe the tube has grown around them. Is this likely and would either cause irregular periods? Also, would tubal reversal be a good option if we are considering having another child?
