Ovarian Cysts and Infertility: Follicular Cyst

Ovarian Cysts can cause infertility in many women. A follicular cyst is a cyst which develops when your body does not release the luteinizing hormone. This should happen during the middle of your normal menstrual cycle. The pituitary gland will release the LH surge and then the follicle will release the egg for fertilization. If there is a follicular cyst, the egg will not be released, which results in infertility.

Treatment

Treatment for follicular cysts is usually not needed. The cyst will generally disappear within a few months of development. Follicular cysts do not usually cause any type of pain or discomfort, and you may not even know that you have one. If you do have pain which is not associated with monthly menstrual cramps, you should see your doctor. He or she will most likely perform an ultrasound to determine the exact problem. If the cyst is large and painful and does not disappear on its own within a few months, it can be removed by a laparoscopic procedure. Your doctor will then send it off to pathology to determine if it is cancerous or not, just to be on the safe side. If the cyst does come back cancerous, you may need to have the ovary removed to prevent the spreading of the cancer cells.

If you think you have ovarian cysts, talk to your doctor to determine if you need to have them removed or not.
