Ovary donation is when a woman chooses to give her eggs to help another woman have the chance at becoming pregnant. Women who become donors go through a screening process that includes signing a consent form as well as participating in an in vitro fertilization program.
For some women, ovary donation provides a once in a lifetime chance to have a baby that they otherwise would not have been able to. Of course there is a monetary incentive for women who become donors, but some women genuinely want to help make it possible for someone’s dreams to come true.
What is the procedure?
Once a woman becomes a donor, she will start hormone injections to help stimulate her ovaries to produce eggs. These eggs are then used in a procedure known as in vitro fertilization, which is one the most effective and popular infertility treatments.
While the egg donor is receiving the hormones, she will be required to report frequently to the clinic for blood tests, as well as tests to check egg counts, as some women may produce to many eggs. The final step is to receive an injection of HCG, for this last step the donor can choose to receive a sedative or even general anesthesia. A fine needle is inserted through the vaginal wall and into the follicles where the eggs are then retrieved. This process usually takes 10-15 minutes.
For those people who are unable to conceive naturally, ovary donation is a blessing. The women who become ovary donors are helping to create miracles every day.
