Do I have to have my birth control impant removed prior to starting feasibility testing for preimplantation genetic diagnosis?

My husband and I are looking to start preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) in a month or so (he has a genetic heart condition). I currently have a birth control implant, which is due to be changed. Does it need to be removed prior to the precycle testing? If so, how long?

In preparation for your fertility treatment, I would have the birth control implant removed and changed to an oral 30mcg tab. However, since they are aware of your medical history and the pregnancy goals you are trying to achieve, you should check with the clinic that will performing the treatment to understand what they perceive to be the best course of action.

Have you broached this with the reproductive endocrinologist who is treating you with PGD?

Yes, you will need to stop any form of hormonal contraception so that your ovarian function can be accurately tested. Then, you will need to be off any form of birth control during your in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycle.
